WELCOME TO THE 2009 SEASON

Welcome to Harpenden Cricket Club.

In these present times of great uncertainty it is a huge achievement to be able to report that there are exciting and positive developments at Harpenden Cricket Club. Yet another successful season in 2008 will be followed by some fantastic changes both on and off the field in 2009.

Harpenden CC run 5 competitive teams on a Saturday and a further 3 on Sundays playing in the Hertfordshire Cricket League and the Slazenger Chess Valley League respectively. There is also a thriving Colts section for children from Under 8 to Under 16 - all are welcome. The Saturday 1st XI continues to play vibrant cricket in the all-day format of the Home Counties Premier League : Division 2 East. The promise and talent of the present squad has now been supplemented by some fine off-season signings including a new captain, current Herts. Minor Counties regular, Ben Frazer.

Ben will bring his fresh approach to both the Club and the captaincy and has already stated his ambition and beliefs : "I would like to see us as a team socialise and enjoy playing together. I believe if you enjoy your cricket and enjoy people you play with then it can only help you play better. There are a number of ideas I want to bring in but the main theme will be that we enjoy our cricket and play hard".

Ben's plans together with the experience of David Doyle as coach and team manager will mean that cricket of the highest quality can be seen on Harpenden Common this season. 2008 was the year that saw Harpenden 2nd XI under David Whiteley cruise to the championship title in the Saracens Herts. Cricket League : Division 3 and elsewhere there were strong showings from all of the club's teams. Harpenden is a Club with huge ambitions to be a major force in the local area and the recruitment of new players and some internal re-organisation show a determination to improve on even our most recent impressive performances.

This website will give you an insight into Harpenden Cricket Club including details of contacts, membership, fixtures, results, performances, social events and other news . There are also links to our sponsors. Any potential new members should feel free to contact Membership Secretary Sharron Brown for further details. Winter nets have now commenced and we would be delighted to hear from anyone who wishes to join a Club who only see further success in front of us.

The pavilion bar is open to members on Saturday and Sunday evenings and all weekday evenings when a match is being played on the Common (virtually every night between May through to the end of July). Saturday evening "Match Reports" by the various Club XI captains are not to be missed!

The changing rooms have been upgraded, a new electronic scoreboard was recently installed (generously donated by Ernie Tyerman, a past player and ex-President of the Club) and groundsman Mick Boot excels in producing pitches that allow any player to demonstrate their full abilities.

The running of the Colts section has passed from Guy Owen-Jones to Rupert Garrett with a number of players representing the Club at County level. Rupert's enthusiasm for the game of cricket and encouraging young cricketing talent has legendary status. In recognition of our work with young cricketers and our work in the community we are accredited by ECB and Sport England with "Clubmark" status and have been designated as a "Focus" club.

For a long time Geoff Newman has been a driving force within the Club and as he stood down as Chairman at the most recent AGM he expressed his delight at the position of the Club and the direction it is taking. The position of Chairman is now taken over by Steve Hewlett and a new era begins. The stated aim of the Club, to strive for excellence, is encapsulated by the framed Shane Warne cricket shirt that hangs in the bar area and the great spinner's position as an Honorary Life Member.
