Harpenden CC are able to reflect on a wonderful 2009 season including being named "Club of the Year" by the Saracens Hertfordshire Cricket League. Chairman Steve Hewlett said -"It has been a truly momentous season for Harpenden Cricket Club. We have had more teams playing than ever before from a new "Mini" section for 6 and 7 year-olds through colts at all ages to three Sunday sides and up to six teams on a Saturday. Our Saturday 3rd XI and 5th XI were both promoted having won their leagues and our 1st XI emerged as league champions thus securing promotion to the Home Counties Premiership. There really has never been a season like it. It's a real tribute to everyone connected with the club, the players, officials, all those who work on the administrative side and all our loyal supporters". WELCOME
Captains Ben Frazer (1st XI) and Simon Wade (3rd XI) skippered their sides to championship success in the Home Counties Premier League Division 2E and the Herts. League Division 4 respectively and these sit proudly with the 5th XI title from Division 13 ensuring a full trophy cabinet. Securing three league titles in a season involved a lot of hard work and Director of Cricket David Doyle is already looking forward to the 2010 campaign in the Home Counties Premier League Division 1. The 2nd XI under the leadership of David Whiteley has the quality for a sustained assault on the summit of the Herts. League Division 2 and Mark Bashford's 4th XI will attempt to secure promotion from Herts. Division 7.
Memorable occasions during 2009 were the August Bank Holiday Monday Twenty/20 competition with a huge crowd ringing the ground, two highly competitive quiz evenings, an awards night in the club pavilion and finally a black tie dinner at Harpenden Golf Club with special guest Middlesex captain Shaun Udal and a surprise
congratulatory message from Honorary Life Member, Shane Warne.
During the season the pavilion bar is open on Saturday and Sunday evenings and all weekday evenings when a match is being played on the Common (virtually every night between May through to the end of July). Saturday evening "Match Reports" by the various Club XI captains are not to be missed !
A thriving Colts section runs smoothly under Rupert Garrett with a "Mini" section for Under 8's plus league and friendly sides for Under 9 through to Under 15 level.
Rupert is keen to improve the quality of coaching on offer to young cricketers and the supply line of young players in to the senior sides. It is also planned to continue the development of relationships that the club has started to build with some local schools in the area. The Colts section had 220 players last year including a newly formed girls' team and targets for 2010 remain ambitious.
In recognition of the work with young cricketers and in the community Harpenden CC is accredited by ECB and Sport England with "Clubmark" status and have been designated as a "Focus" club. The Club is fast approaching it's 150th anniversary in the year 2013 and has proposed putting together a working party to consider how to make the most of this landmark.
Winter nets at the Choice Cricket Indoor School (Redbourn) are now underway - Sundays (All teams) 12-1pm; Wednesdays (4th - 6th XI) 8-9pm & Thursdays
(1st - 3rd XI) 7 -8 pm.
